At My Mint Dental of Bradenton, Dr. Monika Aneja restores damaged teeth with affordable dental crowns that last. A dental crown may last the rest of your life, but as the years go by, you and your dentist will be looking for the following signs that a crown needs replacement.

  • The crown is becoming unsightly. One such problem is a dark margin along the gum line. Commonly gum tissue recedes as we age, and a dark margin then begins to appear above the crown along the gum line.
  • The crown has experienced excessive occlusal wear or otherwise been damaged, for example, become cracked or
  • loose fitting.

  • Dental decay has occurred at the crown margin or under the crown.

You may be wondering why these things can happen.

Dental plaque has a tendency to collect around the base of crowns faster than unrestored healthy teeth. This can lead to problems. Irritated gum tissue pulls back from plaque. As it recedes along a crown margin, it leaves a dark line. If left untreated, the plaque leads to advancing gum disease and increases the risk of dental decay occurring in the roots and under the crown.

If your upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly, you may have excessive wear occur on the occlusal surfaces as a result of normal chewing and nighttime teeth grinding. In this case, the chewing and grinding forces may even fracture the crown, fracture the supporting tooth structure, or loosen the crown.
